CHAPTER 15

It wasn’t a big deal. Mia had just come out to a teammate that she had a major crush on. That crush happened to be a sexy lesbian, with a sexy and young ex. God, Tori was young. According to the league’s website, Victoria Ray was twenty-two years old. Mia had tried not to think about how Skylar had spent the evening and maybe more with Tori during the three-game weekend. The Boomers had won two out of the three, and both of the games that Mia had pitched. Jenny and Samford had pitched the third game since Cheryl wanted to save Mia’s arm. Mia felt good. She didn’t need rest, but Cheryl pointed out that Mia was playing in the upcoming NORCECA event and that she’d need to keep her arm ready to go.

Mia and Skylar had both been called up, which was amazing, but it also gave them more time together, and things had been somewhat awkward since Mia had told her about being attracted to women. She expected a lot of questions once they had some alone time together, but surprisingly, Skylar hadn’t asked her anything about it. They had practiced with the national team a few times, which felt like old times to Mia, but she could sense that Skylar was in awe of the whole thing. This was the first step for her. She’d been a coach before, but there was nothing like representing her country as a player, especially for someone like Skylar.

“Hey, how’s the wrist?” Mia asked when they arrived at the hotel.

“It’s fine. It’s a little sore, honestly. I accidentally left my brace at home.”

“Sky, you’re supposed to wear it while you’re healing whenever you’re not playing,” Mia scolded.

“The PT will wrap it for me. It’s only aching because I’ve been lugging my bat bag and my carry-on around all day.”

“Well, here,” Mia said, quickly taking the handle of Skylar’s bag and then moving to lift her bat bag off her shoulder and placing it over her own. “Now, go talk to the trainers about getting it wrapped before bed.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Skylar gave her a mock-salute.

“I’ll get the room keys and meet you by the elevators.”

“Okay, Number One.” She smiled and headed in the direction of the coaching staff sitting in the lobby.

The event was in Toronto over the next five days. There were eight countries vying for the first-ever championship. The US would play the Dominican Republic first, and then, the winner of Canada and Mexico if they won that. It would be a long few days with little sleep since they’d be watching game film when they weren’t playing, or they’d be in meetings or practice. Mia had the babysitter watching Hazel again. She hated leaving her daughter for long stretches, but she convinced herself that it was for the best.

“Checking in. Landis and Donahue.” She passed her ID to the front desk agent. “I’m Landis. Donahue is over there, but can I just check us in?”

“Sure.” The front desk clerk took a quick look at her ID.
